Residents discussed how the draft Islands Trust Policy Statement would address environmental protection and land-use decisions at a South Pender Local Trust Committee special meeting on December 5, 2025.[1]
Several members of the public said the draft lacked definitions for terms including “unique amenities” and “suitable location for housing alternatives”; trustees said some terms were left broad for island communities to interpret.[1]
Residents also suggested giving the precautionary principle greater emphasis and making environmental protection the highest priority in land-use decisions.[1]
A trustee said the draft’s guiding principles include taking guidance from the precautionary principle, while another said decision-makers must evaluate the information brought forward and cannot always put the environment ahead of everything.[1]
Staff said development permit areas are the most readily available mechanism for trustees to protect certain ecosystem values, and the minutes note that the draft already includes directive policies dealing with shoreline protection.[1]
The meeting was held to gather community feedback on the draft policy statement; the minutes record discussion and suggestions, but no decision on the draft.[1]
