South Pender’s Local Trust Committee asked staff to draft an enforcement policy that would defer enforcement for short-term vacation rentals that were validly operating as of April 30, 2024, until a review of the island’s vacation-rental policies and regulations is complete.[1]

The committee also added a review of short-term vacation-rental policies and regulations to its future projects list.[1]

Regional Planning Manager Robert Kojima told the committee that recent legislative changes affect existing short-term vacation rentals on South Pender, and that Bill 35 eliminated legal non-conforming status for short-term vacation rentals province-wide.[1]

Trustees said they wanted to look into options that might protect existing rentals, and that rentals previously operating validly might now be operating illegally because of the provincial bill.[1]

The committee passed both motions at its May 10 meeting.[1]
